Vertica pricing and customer metrics
Since last fall, Vertica’s stated pricing has been “$100K per terabyte of user data.” Vertica hastens to point out that unlike, for example, appliance vendors or Sybase, it only charges for deployment licenses; development and test are free (although of course you have to Bring Your Own hardware). Offer the past few weeks, I’ve gotten other pricing comments from Vertica to the effect that:
- Of course, Vertica offers substantial negotiated quantity discounts. (Specifics that Vertica told me are confidential.)
- Actually,Vertica’s official price list (unpublished but apparently freely available to prospects) contains quantity discounts too.
- Finally, Vertica told me that its actual average price is around $25K/terabyte, and gave me person to publish same.
I didn’t press my luck and ask exactly what “average” means in this context.
As for customers, metrics I got include:
- After Q1, Vertica had a total of 74 paying customers. This compares to 52, 16, and 1 at the ends of 2008, 2007, and 2006 respectively.
- Vertica cites two customers with databases in the couple hundred terabyte range.
- One, which Vertica named for me on a confidential basis, is a telco that has at least three separate Vertica databases, sized at 200 TB, 40 TB, and 12 TB.
- The other, which Vertica didn’t name for me, is an investment firm. It has a couple of hundred terabytes of trading data in Vertica, and is heading toward half a petabyte over, supposedly, the next few months.
- Outside of those two, I got the impression there are some Vertica databases >10 terabytes, but few or no others >20 terabytes. More precisely, Vertica rattled off a number of customers for databases in that size range, without specifying whether they were in production or not.
