Vertica update
Vertica has been quietly selling product for three quarters and has about 50 customers.
Andy Ellicott of Vertica pointed me to the above Richard Hackathorn quote. Sadly, he asked me not to name and shame another analyst who foolishly said Vertica hadn’t “launched” yet.
But then, I understand. I’m also not going to identify the client who gave me fits by insisting on believing that nonsense, even in the face of the well-known facts that Vertica has shipping product, paying customers, and so on.

[…] claim to have “50” customers includes a bunch of unpaid licenses, many of them in […]
Sybase has filed a federal patent infringement lawsuit against Vertica. http://dockets.justia.com/docket/court-txedce/case_no-6:2008cv00024/case_id-107871/
This will make it impossible for Vertica to indemnify their potential clients in their software license agreements against patent infringement and hence impossible to create perpetual license agreements which will impact their ability to recognize revenue.
In its complaint Sybase accused Vertica of willfully infringing the patent, both literally and under the doctrine of equivalents, through the sale of its Vertica Database.
Potential customers will have to consider the possibility that Vertica will have to re-write it’s solution or pay royalties to Sybase.
Bill,
12 copies of the same comment on my blog were at least 11 too many. I also find it odd that the URL you supplied doesn’t resolve to anything.
